SOTG 2022 - Unified Peaks

…and that's a wrap!

Over the last eight months, we have been creating 'Unified Peaks' for Sculpture on the Gulf 2022, which ended on the 27th of March. During the event, we were overwhelmed with the positive feedback we received!

Unified Peaks is a collaborative project, and it wouldn't have been possible without the support we've received. On behalf of Capana Group, thank you to all the fantastic sponsors and supporters who have been involved.

If you missed your chance to visit our Sculpture, you can still experience it at Heke Brewery, on Waiheke Island.

There is something beautiful but unsettling about Unified Peaks' form as it rises from the landscape, capturing the water's calm and violent behaviour. This is conveyed in the materiality, expressing a combination of smooth turns with aggressive points.

In response to the construction industry's involvement with climate change, the lightweight structure is sculpted using materials found on the fringe of construction sites. The rigid framing is made from upcycled scaffolding poles. The perforated screens are created from the plastic strapping commonly used for packaging, woven into a pattern that produces dynamic shadowing.

What our Sculpture represents is something we are passionate about. 'Unified Peaks' not only creates a platform for discussion of sustainable practice but also provides an opportunity for a tool to be developed, with 100% of the profits from the sculpture sale being put towards this architectural tool.

The result is an intriguing form that can educate the public about the environmental impact of construction whilst providing shading during hot sunny days.

Following the end of Sculpture on the Gulf, the piece now temporarily resides at The Heke on the island for visitors to enjoy at their leisure.

ABOUT SOTG 2022

Sculpture on the Gulf is arguably the most influential of all New Zealand’s ‘galleries without walls’ with a potential audience of 30,000 people.

Based on Waiheke Island and set amongst some of the most magnificent coastal landscapes in the world, the undulating walkway, which snakes its way around the headland from above Matiatia towards Church Bay on Waiheke Island, has served as a temporary home for pieces created by a who’s who of New Zealand art.

Making of Unified Peaks

It was a special journey turning Unified Peaks from an idea into a reality.

We documented this journey from the beginning of concept sketches to completion.
