As the founder of Capana Group, Francisco Carbajal has steadily risen as an emerging leader in sustainable architecture. We sat down with Francisco to explore his journey, achievements, and vision for the future of the industry.
Francisco’s commitment to sustainability was recently recognised with the Emerging Leader 2024 award from the New Zealand Green Building Council (NZGBC). As the inaugural recipient of this honour, Francisco shared his thoughts on this milestone. “It was a nice surprise to be acknowledged for all the hard work that we’ve been doing at Capana Group,” he reflected. “Receiving this award is a significant milestone for me and marks the culmination of years of dedication.”

Francisco’s journey in architecture began during his university years, where he laid the foundation for a career centred on sustainability. Over the past decade, he has worked tirelessly to develop innovative tools like LCAlink, a Revit plugin designed to streamline Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) analyses. “It’s been a journey,” Francisco said. “From writing my thesis on the importance of measurement and management to creating tools like LCAlink, the focus has always been on improving the way we design and build. And we’re not stopping here; we’re currently working on new projects like the material comparison tool.”

Winning the Emerging Leader award has further fuelled Francisco’s determination to make a difference. “The recognition really gives me confidence moving forward,” he shared. “With the platform this award provides, I want to strengthen the connection between students and professionals to facilitate the transition to a more sustainable future.”

Francisco’s vision is clear: to propel the industry toward practices that prioritise sustainability and resilience. “What’s most important is improving how we design and construct buildings,” he emphasised. “The industry needs to transform, and collaboration across generations is essential to making that happen.” Looking ahead, Francisco is focused on expanding Capana Group’s impact and driving meaningful change in the built environment.
